DOT AU Domains are the Top Level Domains of Australia. These are domains ending with AU. The DOT AU Domains available are COM.AU, NET.AU, ORG.AU, ASN.AU and ID.AU.
AU Domains are not freely registered like for eg
International Top Level Domains. There are rules which differ according to which extensions you are registering for.
Specific Rules for AU Domains

DOT COM.AU is the commercial extension for AU. It is only for companies and businesses. For companies they must have ACN as registered through ASIC, and for businesses, they must be registered with state governments of Australia.

DOT ORG.AU is for non profit or charities organisations.

DOT ID.AU is for individuals who are citizens or residents of Australia.
Basic Rules for AU Domains
1. The
allowable character set includes the letters 'a' to 'z', the
numbers '0' to '9' and hyphen '-'.
2. No domain
may start with or end with hyphen '-'.
3. The
minimum number of characters is 2 while the maximum is 63.
4. Upper or lower cases does not
make any difference in domain registrations.
